I am on holliday in Sharm. People working at hotel & beach claims there is no sharks in Sharm el sheik – beaches closed due to chemicals in water(?). Our travel agency sent out sms with warnings about the shark.
@ Mac – Yes, the warning that you received from your Travel Agency is correct. There has been a shark attack in the Naama Bay are on 4 Russian tourists over the past couple of days. Therefore, no chemicals in the water they are probably saying that not to cause a state of panic..
I live & work in Sharm. I am also a diver and love to snorkel. There have been & always will be sharks in the water(white tip reefs for example). The problem is the people who feed fish, throw in bait which will encourage bigger fish and the boats that do illegal fishing. Be sensible and enter at your own risk. It wouldn’t put me off diving as I don’t believe divers are at as much a risk as some swimmers that deliberately take food out to feed the fish around shallow areas. Respect the reef and its habitants & they will respect you.
There are sharks in the Red Sea. I have been diving in the Red Sea for 4 years (70 plus dives) and have never seen one. I have snorkeled as well, hundreds of times, and have never seen a shark. This is truly a very sad situation, and I am sorry that you have been told wrong information.
There are rarely shark attacks in the sea as baiting has never been allowed, so sharks have not associated food with boats. There are thousands of dives in the Red Sea every day. Unfortunately, this has happened. I am very sad for the families involved.
That’s crazy! I would be more worried about a chemical spill than Sharks. What resort are you at?
I’m a professional snorkeling guide in the Red Sea. (Hurghada).I used to Say that there are sharks in the Red Sea region but I never sow them and if someone of the divers sow this before thats only cause he makes a deep dive and totally fare from the coast plus its very rare….
the things that we see daily are the dolphins and we knew that they are wild as will. only when you try to touch or attack them. cause they are not well trained as those in delphinium’s .
so we used prevent & inform the guest that its a full responsibility on you if you tried to touch or attack or to feat the fish cause this in out off low and that will make you face the troubles for the big size fishes that will be attracted by this little ones.
I’m really sorry for what happened in Sharm El Shekh but we should know that it is a result of breaking the low from the guests side. not only the country low but also the nature. as the traditions for the Russian and the Chinese here in the Red Sea are to fill the bottles with bread and food for the fish and collecting the corals and the shells. so thats one of the most Dangerous thing in the sea.
The first and Last advice for the guests in the Red Sea ( there is nothing Dangerous in the Sea if we are only watching. but if you will start to Touch, feat, steal and corrupt every thing became against you)
Dear guests you are so much welcomed in the Red Sea all the time. but please don’t break the Rules.
Best regards.
Moody Raouf Youssef
I agree totally about tourists being irresponsible when they take food for the fish. I have been above reef sharks, under giant manta’s and still no incident. The swarms of fish were amazing to watch as they avoided the sharks, so the sharks will follow the fish, so don’t encourage the fish with bait!!!!!
Dear Moody Raouf,
your are so right! I love the Red Sea and diving there, but the tourism and money are the most dangerous things there – not the sharks. I know that I shouldn’t visit there, but I’m selfish and coming again in a few weeks…
Respect the nature!
Anne
There completely wrong as the Egyptian Red Sea has a fair few species of shark within it, including the more bold and dangerous ‘pelagic’ Grey Reef, Oceanic White-Tip and Tiger shark. Good of the travel agaencies/coampanys to send out advise, albeit that sharks are not the ‘man eaters’ there made out to be.
PADI Diving Instructor/Frequent Red Sea Diver
The Grey reef shark is not pelagic. The Oceanics often are seen at or near the wreck of the ‘Yolanda’ from 20m down – there was an attack in 2007 at Sharm on a snorkeller near Shark Observatory. These sharks are rare however, and as people are saying, we may well be encouraging them inshore (they normally are never seen in this area).
Could this be the same shark?
Dear Mac
Please note that today it was announced that this is because a Shark attach three tourists in the local water of Sharm
The authorities are working on Cathing it
I assure you that there is no Chemical pollution in the water as the hotel Claims
Thanks
Sharm is one of the worlds hotspots for sharks. Been there a few times.
All oceans have Sharks, and there are shark’s in Sharm el Sheikh and all of the red sea. This type of Shark does not normally come close to the reef or the shore. A ship passing threw the strait of Tiran threw dead sheep overboard, which is equivalent to shark feeding. It is important when on the surface of the water to stay close to the reef and to not swim on the surface in deep blue water. All of the attacks were on swimmers going out too far away from the reef.
Yes there are defineatly sharks in the Red Sea. I was there i month ago, and scuba-dived with Grey reef, Hammerheads, Threshers and oceanic whitetip. Some of the other divers on the boat even saw two silky sharks.
It should be said that all our shark encounters were without any form of feeding, and at offshore reefs such as Brothers Islands, Deadealus reef etc. We did not experience anything unpleasent but had a truly amazing experience. Especielly with the curiosity of the Oceanic Whitetip.
When this is said, it is extremely sad what happened during the week in Sharm, and i feel for everybody involved.
I just heard that they caught the shark.
Anybody know more about this?
We just got back from sea magic resort, there was three sharks, they did bite three Russian people . They caught one , and put it in the ocean . Killed one and still hunting the third . We saw the one they killed , it was about 2meters long !
I work for a travel agents in the UK and it IS a shark attack amongst tourists in Sharm El Sheikh. As tragic as the news is, This should not affect your holiday in anyway. This catastrophe can happen in any holiday hot spot and as unfortunate as it is, things like this happen. Sympathy goes to those who were injured however.. Dont let this ruin your holiday. Egypt is lovely for snorking, diving, relaxing. Locals will ensure you have a great time and would not put your lives at risk! Keep an eye out for the Red flags – they dont always mean rough sea currents.
sorry for the attack, but sometimes it happens.still the diving and snorkling is amazing in this spot.

It has been written in all the Egyptian newspapers today that in fact sharks have attacked 4 tourists and the reason is that OVERFISHING int the red sea . Fishing boats and the bedouins using dynamites to kill hundreds of fish in one second plus other individuals who are fishing all the year without respecting the fish reproduction season have made the food rare for sharks that is why they swim near the shore to look for food . NO FOOD FOR THE SHARKS ..OVERFISHING IS THE REASON…
Just saw a picture on a Danish news website that thay have cought two sharks in Sharm.
Its a shame in my piont of view.
Im going to Marsa Alam in 9 days, and I hope to see some sharks there..
I have spent many holidays at Sharm and Dahab. It is very clear that a new generation of tourism has invaded the Red Sea. Many things in tourist behaviour has also changes. The most obvious is the taking hotel food to the beach and feeding the fish. This is most common for tourist that havent gotten an interest in diving and snorkling. I can bet that the lady had food with her and that the guard tried to communicate this to her prior jumping into the sea.
I belive the hotels should inform the tourist about the risks on entering the water and introduce a fine for people feeding fish, braking corals or in any other way littering the beach and the water
Dear thesoi6, find below the required information

It is hard to say “Don’t afraid” to you but just be careful
Which you all the best
I agree totally with formerfluent – it is the tourist behaviour. I have dived many times in Sharm (but never seen sharks) However, I have dived with Sharks in Maldives and never had a problem.
These tourist who clear the breakfast buffet to take to the beach are those responsible. If they intend to feed the fish then common sense prevails that it will attract all kinds of species.
Maybe now they will take note. It is all down to responsible behaviour.
My mum and her partner were on holiday in the resort when the shark attacks happened, they had also been in the red sea prior to the attacks. They were not given any advise from the hotel/reps and only heard about the attacks from other tourists. I think this is unacceptable as you do not expect there to be sharks that close to the shore, you should be made aware that this can happen.
As someone who visits sharm four or five times a year & accumulates many dives there its been a privilege to have seen many different species of shark (none ever aggresive) but when hotels start illegal baiting as has been sugested by some of the dive prsonel in sharm we will end up with the same problem that the USA Australia & South Africa has along with other nations that carry out this practice. It is a constant fight at the hotel that we use that has a large propotion of Russians who consider themselves beyond the law when it comes to feeding fish of the pontoon & when free diving continually breaking off coral or walking acroos the coral instead of using the pontoon. I have heard from one Egytian instructor who was cicled by & had to strike a shark on a inshore instruction dive which then departed it is their terittory we are the visitors respect them the the dive adage there is take memorys & leave bubbles nothing else i hope those involved in this unfortunate episode rcover as best they can.
Hello, what’s all this about the sharks?? I left my left leg surfing in Australia due to a shark attack, but still happy – even my wife thinks it’s cool without a leg.(I don’t know – maybe she is sexually disturbed. Anyhow , a couple of weeks ago (in the Mexico) I had the pleasure to meet another shark (approx. 2,5 m) this time, (without my leg) I punched him in his face – that scared the shit out of him. So keep your pants on…..
Hello, It’s me again…I did not receive any reply conc. my comment..anyhow on Thursday I’m going down to sharm to kill the beast with my bare hands…I shall put the video on You Tube…you will surprised – I’m like the incarnation of “CROCODILE DUNDEE” You will surely hear more from me……..
When i visit a blog, chances are that I see that the construction is poor and the writting bad. Regarding your blog,I could honestly say that you writting is decent and your website solid.
Shark attacks seems to occur more and more frequently all over the world. For unknown reasons, this problem will get worse. It is well known that dolphin chase sharks even killing them. They can charge the shark and use their nose to hit. So why not to use trained dolphins against sharks. Moreover, It could be a plus for tourism.
